Austria/Germany

When I asked Jess to try and get a few of the kids to post comments on the blog, I told her I would create a new post for when they got to Austria and Germany. I still can't believe they are down to their last week!

Spoke with Lynne very briefly. She didn't enjoy the tents too much. She said they slept on hay. She took a walk and the country side is beautiful, but I think she's ready for her own unshared room. It looks like they have some down-time tomorrow to relax and regroup.

Spoke to Jess briefly today. Apparently the phone cards that some of them bought in Italy don't work in Austria! Figures!

She also emailed and said the phones don't work too well and that it was COLD!

Sarah called this morning. It is rainy and cold. She is feeling a little homesick. Today they are going to watch movies (!!??!). After the great hotels, this hostel is a bit of a let down. 5 to a room sharing 1 bathroom. There is only 1 phone and 1 computer available.
I did hear a lot about the tent experience at the castle. Complete with straw mattresses on wooded pallets; and horns to wake them up. Sounds like quite an experience!
Hopefully the weather will clear and spirits will improve.

Lynne just called. She sounded much better this morning. What a little rest and fresh Austrian air won't do! I guess about half of the group went to the "fault line" and half didn't. Lynne was among the half that didn't. She and Sarah were watching movies on her ipod. I can't imagine being in Austria and choosing to watch movies. She did say she got out for an about an hour long walk, the rain had stopped and the scenery was beautiful.

Caitlin has sent several very brief emails this week. Her phone card has worked intermittenty. She has had some real issues with her ATM card in Austria because some of the machines do not work with accounts tied to savings accounts only - which was what she had. Sefcu actually had to set up a checking account for her to make sure she can access her money.

Caitlin opted to stay in and sleep some more today. It sounds like she was pretty exhausted. She said that she too went for a walk for an hour. I wonder if she went with Lynne?

She has commented on how beautiful Austria is. I did not get much more detail, other than it is cold. Oh - and she did request that her sisters pick her up on Monday so they could take her to Taco Bell. I guess she is a little homesick :)

A few more brief emails from Caitlin. It is still cold. Five to a room was fun, even with just one bathroom. The food has been less than appetizing and she was "starving". But, the meal with the family tonight was great. They are going to the Audi factory, not BMW as I thought. Her ATM card now works fine and thanks to whoever lent her 15 euros until we could get that all straightened out.

Sarah called us at 1 AM ( yesterday's call was at 4 AM). They were on their way to Germany. No one was looking forward to Dachau. She said they were wearing sun glasses to hide their eyes and tears.
Yesterday they did some shopping ( Sarah bought a shirt and a sweater) and went to a cooking class. The food was great , but they were not given copies of the recipes. I forgot to ask if they had dinner w/ an Austrian family.
She sounded very upbeat. It had stopped raining but was still very chilly. The were told to dress warmly as Germany was going to be cold as well.
In Austria they discovered that several of them could swap clothes. She and Caitlin have been swapping and " doubling" each others wardrobes. ( sounds like the "traveling pants"). The folks at the hostel also did their laundry for them was a real treat.
I am not a very good historian when the calls come this early in the morning, Sorry if I didn't get very many details.
The group was pretty noisy in the background and I can only assume they are having a good time. She said they all got some much needed rest while in Austria.
This is the last stop for our kids; hard to believe this adventure is almost over!

Thank you to all bloggers. Annemarie's phone card did not work for most of the trip, so this website was very helpful. (I did get a very long collect call from Greece - $$$! - and a few quick messages via credit card and e-mail.) See you all on Monday! - Mary Ann

Hi there - I can't believe the kids are due home tomorrow!! Does anyone know what flight they're going to be on? The original word was that they would be back at the mall around 11:30 pm. Any one have ant more info? Thanks, Cara

According to the P@P website, they leave Munich on flight 973 Lufthansa Airlines) at 1:25pm and arrive in Frankfurt around 2:30pm, then they leave Frankfurt
at 5:15pm on flight 482 (Lufthansa Airlines) and arrive in Newark around 8pm.

I know the leaders said they would be back in Albany by 11:30pm, but if they have to go through customs and all that fun stuff, I don't realistically see them getting out of Newark until after 9pm and not getting to Albany until some time after 12pm.

YOu an can check the status of their flights at lufthansa.com

See everyone tomorrow night.

Sarah called and told us that the kids are being split again for the first flight tomorrow in Germany. I asked her to call if she can when she knows which flight she is on.If she can get through, I will try to find out who is on the second flight.
She and Annmarie have been roommates for these last 2 nights.
They are enjoying their last evening. Every one is all packed and ready to go; all cell phones are charged so they can call us from NJ. They will be at the airport in Germany before noon tomorrow.
I'll let you know if I learn anything.
See you all Monday night ( Tuesday AM is more likley !)

Sarah called from the Munich airport this mornng ( about 7:25 AM). She was w/ the second group and just getting ready to board. Annmare , Lynne and Chelsea were with her along with several others and Ruth and Kevin.
There is a short layover in Frankfurt ( they were told they would hold the plane for them in the event of a delay.) Sarah said she will call when they land in NJ.
The Journey home has begun !
